UNEX supports architects with practical intertenancy screening solutions for multi-unit housing, including aluminium screens designed to provide privacy, define boundaries and integrate with modern residential design.
As higher-density housing continues to evolve across New Zealand, the need for effective intertenancy solutions has never been more important. Outdoor living areas such as decks and balconies on multi-unit housing require considered design to achieve visual privacy, define boundaries - without introducing unnecessary construction complexity.
UNEX Systems are the experts in designing external intertenancy screening, utilising practical aluminium solutions. These systems are designed to deliver privacy and functionality while integrating with modern architectural forms.

Technical support for intertenancy screen design
Designing intertenancy screens involves consideration for structural requirements for wind-load design, along with balancing privacy and openness.
UNEX supports architects and designers by simplifying this process through:
- Early-stage design advice and layout support
- Guidance on fixing substrates and structural considerations
- Product selection aligned with performance and aesthetic requirements
- Site-specific engineering for projects where screens form part of a barrier system
This approach ensures intertenancy screens are resolved at the appropriate time in the design process, rather than becoming problematic later on site.

A popular solution: UNEX Safa-Slat aluminium screens
The UNEX aluminium Safa-Slat system is a popular and low-maintenance solution for external intertenancy applications. The slats typically run horizontally, but they can also be configured to run vertically if required. Safa-Slat provides a balance of openness and privacy.
The Safa-Slat infill is constructed from either 50mm x 16mm or 70mm x 19mm aluminium slats. The width of the gaps between the slats can be adjusted to either increase or decrease the balance of privacy versus openness. However, if the slat are running horizontally and the screen is adjacent to a balustrade preventing a fall, there are limitations on how big the gaps can be, for anti-climbing regulations.
Safa-Slat can be powder-coated in a wide range of Dulux colours or Metwood timber-look options.
