Custom Balustrade Solution for Waikato Museum

A custom-engineered balustrade solution for Waikato Museum blends safety, durability, and architectural intent. Installed by Acclaim Aluminium and designed by UNEX Systems, the heavy-duty Topline balustrade with vertical fins meets C3 load requirements—perfect for high-traffic public spaces..

A Balustrade Designed to Honour the Architecture and the Public

When the Waikato Museum underwent a refurbishment in 2025, safety, visual transparency, and architectural integrity were top priorities. The brief called for a robust balustrade system that could perform in a high-traffic environment without compromising the museum’s clean, contemporary lines.

UNEX Systems partnered with Acclaim Aluminium, a trusted authorised fabricator based in Hamilton, to deliver a site-specific balustrade solution that balances compliance, form, and function.

Topline - Site-Specific Design

The Solution: Custom Topline with Heavy-Duty Vertical Fins

For this high-traffic public environment, UNEX supplied a site-specific variation of the Topline balustrade, featuring robust vertical fins in the CTH2 profile (60 x 16mm). Engineered for strength and visual impact, the custom design delivers a refined, contemporary aesthetic that aligns with the museum’s architectural language.

The balustrades were installed to heights of 1200–1230mm above the masonry nib in elevated areas and 1100–1130mm above stair nosings, providing consistent protection and meeting the performance requirements for public use. Built to comply with C3 crowd loading, the system ensures safety across all visitor areas while maintaining design continuity throughout the project.

Supporting Architects with PS1 and Site-Specific Designs

UNEX specialises in helping architects achieve compliance with confidence. This includes:

  • Pre-engineered PS1 documentation for standard installations
  • Site-specific solutions, like this one, tailored to complex public environments
  • Assistance with meeting NZBC Clauses F4 (Safety from Falling) and D1 (Access Routes)

Competitors often offer limited off-the-shelf systems. UNEX sets itself apart by combining engineered performance with the flexibility to design around architectural challenges—whether that’s mounting methods, glass vs. fin options, or integrating with existing masonry or timber substrates.

Trusted Collaboration from Start to Finish

This project was brought to life through seamless collaboration between UNEX Systems, Downey, and Acclaim Aluminium. From initial specification to install, the team worked together to ensure everything met the design intent, council compliance requirements, and timeline.

It’s always a pleasure working with the UNEX team on custom solutions. Their technical support and engineered designs make our job on-site a lot smoother.
