Accessible Stairway Handrails

In accordance with NZBC Clause D1 Access Routes, accessible stairways and ramps must be equipped with handrails on both sides where the ramp slope exceeds 1 in 20. Additionally, any stairway wider than 2.0m requires handrails on both sides, and if wider than 4.0m, an intermediate handrail at the center is mandated.

NZBC specifies handrail design criteria as follows:

  • Handrails should possess a graspable profile suitable for adult hands.
  • For handrails serving accessible stairways or ramps, a minimum 300mm horizontal extension must be provided at each end.
  • Handrails must be positioned between 900mm and 1m above the pitchline.
  • A clearance of 45 to 60mm between the handrail and adjacent walls or obstructions is required.

It's important to note that the NZBC includes additional requirements beyond those mentioned here. Click here to view the full building code compliance document for D1 Access Routes.
